My home air conditioner just quit. HELP!!!?

I turned it on today and noticed just regular air was blowing out. I have central air. I went outside and noticed the Lennox unit was humming but the fan was not spinning. When you first turn the thermostat on to cool, the unit just clicks and then hums, nothing else. Can someone tell me what could be the problem. Thanks.

It sounds like the run capacitor is bad. You can find a step by step troubleshooting guide on the air conditioner page at http://www.hvac-for-beginners.com You can probably fix it yourself and save a couple hundred dollars.

it could be you are low on freon. It could be a bad fan, It could be a lot of things. I would start by checking the freon level.

When you turn it on, at the air handler, notice if the copper lines get cold,or can you hear the refrigerant moving in the coils. If so your compressor is working.
Out side at the condenser, try and spin the fan and see if it picks up and starts running. If it does, then the capacitor is bad. If not, it could be a stuck contact or at the worse a bad fan motor.

    Hope this helps

If it’s just a slight hum that would be the contactor energized by the thermostat.
Sounds like you may not have 220 volt power there. May have a fuse out or breaker tripped.
